In het late Vermeer-schilderij “Lady Standing at the Virginals” in de
National Gallery in Londen lijkt als in een omgekeerde tijdmachine de
koele heldere abstracte geometrische orde van Mondriaan door te klinken.
Beeldrijmen van rechthoeken vormen een strakke geometrische orde, die
het beeld een onveranderlijke kristallijne structuur geven.
Een “kubus van licht” ( Simon Schama).
Vooral bij de late Vermeer zie je een streven naar geometrische abstractie,
die Mondriaan drie eeuwen later tot een definitieve vorm zou uitontwikkelen.
In het Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort kun je ervaren hoe het moet zijn geweest
om in het atelier van Mondriaan in de Rue du Départ in Parijs te staan;
een kunstwerk op zichzelf.

zou wat mij betreft ook over Vermeer en Mondriaan kunnen gaan:

Astounding! It was actually, it was beyond belief. These were first and only
drafts of music; they showed no corrections of any kind. Not one.
He had simply written down music already finished in his head! Page after page
of it as if he were just taking dictation. And music, finished as no music is
ever finished. Displace one note and there would be diminishment.
Displace one phrase and the structure would fall. It was clear to me that sound
