Mark Rothko – “Pockets of Silence”

Gezien in Gemeentemuseum in Den Haag, 19 augustus 2014:
Mark Rothko, zaal met Seagram Paintings.

“And the princess and the prince discuss
what is real and what is not
it doesn’t matter inside the Gates of Eden”
Bob Dylan.

marmer.

“Truth is an arrow
and the Gate is narrow
that it passes through”
Bob Dylan

Simon Schama in de BBC-serie “The Power of Art” hoor spreken over
de Seagram Paintings in de Rothko Room in de Tate Modern in Londen:

“Look at this one, what do you see ?
A hanging veil suspended between two columns ?
An opening that beckons or denies entrance ?
A blind window ?
For me it is a gateway.
If some of those portals are blocked,
others open into the unknown space that Rothko talked about.
A place where only art can take us.
Away from the buzzing static of the moment
towards the Music of the Spheres………

………. This isn’t about “Now”, this is about “Forever”.
This is a place where you come to sit in the low light,
and feel the aeons rolling by, to be taken towards the Gates
that open to the treshholds of eternity, to feel the poignancy of
our comings and our goings, our entrances and our exits,
our births and our deaths, womb, tomb, and everything in between.
Can art ever be more complete, more powerful ? “

Rothko: “……..many of those who are driven to this life,
are desperately searching for these pockets of silence,
where we can root and grow………”.
