\nBegin jaren 60 schilderde Richter voor het eerst foto’s na. Dit konden
\nkrantenknipsels zijn en familiekiekjes die in zwart-wit werden uitvergroot.
\nLater schilderde hij ook eigen foto’s na zoals landschappen en zeegezichten
\nin kleur. Of een foto van zijn vrouw in \u201cLesende\u201d en zijn dochter in \u201cBetty\u201d.
\nVaak vervaagt hij de contouren van zijn motieven zodat de schilderijen nog
\nmeer aan foto’s doen denken dan werken van andere fotorealistisch werkende
\nschilders (bv. Tisch).
\nSoms gaat het vervreemdende effect van de abstrahering zover dat het
\noorspronkelijke voorbeeld nauwelijks nog te herkennen is. Richter verklaarde
\ndat hij de waardering voor het ‘als een automaat’ naschilderen van foto’s aan
\nhet voorbeeld van de popart-kunstenaar Andy Warhol te danken heeft.<\/p>\n

From his “Writings”, the following quotations refer to photography and its
\nrelationship with painting and the “blur”:
\n\u2022 “The photograph is the most perfect picture. It does not change; it is
\nabsolute, and therefore autonomous, unconditional, devoid of style”.
\n\u2022 “The flowing transitions, the smooth equalizing surface, clarify the
\ncontent and make the representation credible (an “alla prima” impasto
\nwould be too reminiscent of painting, and would destroy the illusion).\u201d
\n\u2022 “I blur things to make everything equally important and equally unimportant.
\nI blur things so that they do not look artistic or craftsmanlike but
\ntechnological, smooth and perfect. I blur things to make all the parts a
\ncloser fit. Perhaps I also blur out the excess of unimportant information.”<\/p>\n

Op 13\u201312-2011 gaf Joost Zwagerman een DWDD-kunstcollege over Johannes
\nVermeer, waarin hij het \u201cLezend Meisje bij het Venster\u201d uit Dresden
\nvergelijkt met het fotorealistische schilderij \u201cLesende\u201d van Gerhard
\nRichter, samen met werk van de Engelse fotograaf Tom Hunter en de
\nNederlandse fotograaf Jan Banning.<\/p>\n
