Beiden waren<br \/>\nlange tijd als kleine meesters nagenoeg vergeten  en vervolgens weer<br \/>\nherontdekt en hergewaardeerd door kunstkenners. Hun beider oeuvre is<br \/>\nklein: minder dan 40 werken. Allebei schilderden ze in de luwte van<br \/>\neen klein, rustig provinciestadje: Vermeer in het Hollandse Delft en<br \/>\nDe la Tour in Lun\u00e9ville in de Franse Elzas; over hun leven is verder<br \/>\nniet zo veel bekend. Wat ze gemeen hebben is het vinden en weergeven<br \/>\nvan hun eigen licht: Vermeer schilderde zijn heldere, parelachtige<br \/>\ndaglicht, La Tour specialiseerde zich in nachtstukken, clair-obscur<br \/>\n\u201cnocturnes\u201d in warm kaarslicht.
