I have always loved the way Hopper\u2019s<br \/>\npaintings, with an economy of means, are able to address the mysteries and<br \/>\ncomplexities of the human condition. Placing one or two figures in humble,<br \/>\nintimate settings, he created quiet scenes that are psychologically compelling<br \/>\nwith open-ended narratives. The characters\u2019 emotional states can seem to waver<br \/>\nparadoxically between reverie and alienation, or perhaps between longing and<br \/>\nresignation. Dramatic lighting heightens the emotional overtones, but any final<br \/>\ninterpretation is left to the viewer. The general mood in<br \/>\nmy work is more somber, and the lighting is less harsh than in Hopper\u2019s. In this way, I like to think of my images as dramas for a small stage, with<br \/>\nthe figures as actors in a one or two character play. The characters, by appearance,<br \/>\nare rooted specifically in the past, somewhere in Hopper\u2019s mid-twentieth century.<br \/>\nFor me, this augments the dreamlike, staged effect of the scenes.
