In Austrian video artist Gustav Deutsch’s Shirley: Visions of Reality (2013), pictures literally speak for themselves, with this experimental film using prominent US painter Edward Hopper’s calculated renderings of American society to tell the story of a fictional actress – a prime example of art imitating art.
Recreated through the guise of thirteen of Hopper’s best known paintings, Deutsch has created a series of vivid snapshots which thread together into a fascinating synthesis of art and film. What we get is a unique presentation of an aspiring actress, whose trials and tribulations paint their own portrait of American history.
Geen film voor het grote publiek, het verhaal is niet erg overtuigend en je moet ervoor in een speciale stemming zijn, maar de beelden zijn van een adembenemende schoonheid.
Zelf beschouw ik Hopper als een soort 20-eeuwse Vermeer, met zijn verstilde
scenes, waarin het licht altijd een essentiële rol speelt. Eigenlijk is Hopper
schildertechnisch gezien niet eens zo’n heel goede schilder, maar zijn visie
is uniek en ijzersterk. Hopper liet zich zelf ook graag inspireren door films van zijn tijd.

“De Schilderkunst” en “De Astronoom”-
Johannes Vermeer
JCJ Vanderheyden heeft het grootste deel van zijn leven
door gebracht in hetzelfde atelier in Den Bosch in zijn
zoektocht naar Licht, Tijd en Ruimte.
Net zo heeft Johannes Vermeer zijn hele leven gewoond
en gewerkt in Delft. Het is ook geen toeval dat in het
werk van JCJ Vanderheyden echo’s van Vermeer zijn terug te
vinden. Vermeer en JCJ Vanderheyden zijn geestverwanten;
ieder op zijn eigen manier zijn ze bezig met experimenten
mbv lenzen, spiegels, camera’s, schilderkunst op zoek naar
de universele wetten van Licht, Tijd en Ruimte.
Altijd in die ene zelfde hoek van die ene kamer, bij het
raam waar het licht altijd van links komt.
Stabilitas Loci: op één plek verblijven om de verdieping op te
zoeken en niet weg te lopen van dat waaraan je je verbonden hebt…..

A traveller puts his head under the edge of the firmament in the original (1888) printing of the Flammarion engraving.
The engraving depicts a man, clothed in a long robe and carrying a staff, who kneels down and passes his head, shoulders, and right arm through a gap between the star-studded sky and the earth, discovering a marvellous realm of circling clouds, fires and suns beyond the heavens. One of the elements of the cosmic machinery bears a strong resemblance to traditional pictorial representations of the “wheel in the middle of a wheel” described in the visions of the Hebrew prophet Ezekiel. The caption that accompanies the engraving in Flammarion’s book reads:
A missionary of the Middle Ages tells that he had found the point where the sky and the Earth touch…
Fifty years ago, on June 3, 1965, Edward White stepped out of the orbiting Gemini 4 spacecraft to become the first US astronaut to walk in space. White is captured in this photo taken by mission commander James McDivit from inside the capsule as White’s spacewalk began over the Pacific Ocean on Gemini 4’s third orbit. Planet Earth, spacecraft, and tether are reflected in White’s gold tinted helmet visor. White later described his historic spacewalk as the most comfortable part of the mission, and said the order to end it was the “saddest moment” of his life.

Fotograaf Erwin Olaf ontwikkelt zich steeds meer van extravagante theatraliteit in de richting van verstilde melancholie. In de documentaire “Vensters op Vermeer-Views on Vermeer” spreekt hij zijn bewondering voor Vermeer uit.
